Kevin was lying on his bed, mindlessly scrolling through his feed. Endless posts past his eyes, each one showed him scenes full of laughter and adventure; experiences that felt distant to him. He felt a weight on his chest, a longing for something more.He put the phone down and looked towards the window. A single beam of sunlight had managed to get in through the blackout curtains. It was inviting him outside, promising warmth and freedom.Kevin got up and closed the curtain completely, as if crushing the beam of light along with the false promises. He had already given up on that idea. After being betrayed countless times, he had stopped trusting anyone. For him, every smile was a mask hiding a lie; every act of kindness was a trick hiding an ulterior motive.Kevin went back to the bed and continued scrolling. He stumbled upon a video of people having fun on a beach. He recognized one of them. Curious, he tapped on the tagged list and found her: Kate S.
He checked her profile. Her posts were full of vibrant images of a happy life: fun vacations, exotic meals, and smiling faces. To him, it looked like another world. Unreal. Unreachable.In her most recent post, a detail caught his attention. The image showed Kate at a cafe, with the caption “New beginnings, fresh brews” under it. Kevin zoomed in on the picture. The patterned tiles, the wooden table, the cuckoo clock in the back. He knew that place. Kate was here, only a few streets away. The thought of her being so close woke something in him that had lain dormant for years.Kevin remembered how perfect Kate was back in high school. Social skills, intellect, beauty, she had it all. On top of that, she was kind, gentle and caring.He wondered what truths lay behind her gentle smile. If everyone was hiding something, Kate must be too. And the thought that she might be hiding something like the rest drew him in. He wanted to know what she was hiding beneath the perfection. He had to know more.
